How to look after chickens

This weekend I have the school chickens to look after.
I am going to tell you how to look after them.
We have to fed them 3 times a day. And give them water 3 times a day.
You need to keep the light on them to keep them warm.
You need to change the newspaper in the box so they stay clean.
Now I will tell you how to hold them.
You have to cover your hand and make a little hole so they can move around.
You need to be slow and quiet when you hold them.
Here are some photos of the chickens at my house.

  4. How lucky you are to be allowed to take the chickens home Chloe. They look a bit small to lay an egg for your breakfast. What other animals do you have at school? Na Matua Dudley

    1. We have rabbits and Jazz. Jazz is a Rainbow Lorikeet. We can't take her home. We have pukekos and ducks that live at school too. They are like Jazzy. We can't take them home.

  5. What a great job you are doing Chloe. My mum has chickens at her house and she gets me to look after them when she goes on holiday so I know how hard it is.

I think the chicken is saying "Where am I?"
What do you think he is saying Jacqui?

  7. Wow... it looks like you are doing a great job with the chicks! Were the chicks hatched at school? We are thinking about hatching chickens and building a chook house at our school next year. Keep up the good work :)

    1. Our chicks weren't hatched at school.
It will be good for you to do chickens at your school. Make sure you let the kids take them home for the weekend.

  8. Hi Chloe,
You are doing an awesome job!
What do you do with the chicks when you are changing the newspaper?
What food do you give them?

We put the chicks in another box when we change the newspaper. But yesterday one went flap, flap and flew out and I had to put it back again. That was funny.
We give them chicken porridge to eat.

  10. Hi Chloe... So that explains the funny noises I heard when I drove past your home yesterday... just joking honey. You are turning in to the chicken whisperer Miss Chloe. Ezara's aunty and uncle have chickens at their farm and Ezara likes to go and feed them some of the food scraps when we go out there for a visit. What foods do you think the chickens will eat when they get bigger?
xx Keep up the great work Chloe xx
    Na Keri :)
